At a glance

A tsunami growth industry

Data centers are experiencing explosive growth, with a very high annual growth rate fueled by AI, streaming, and connectivity. This expansion generates a staggering 1,500 exabytes of data annually (equivalent to 1,500 billion GB).

Managing this data comes at a cost: data centers currently consumed 460 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2022. Data center’s total electricity consumption could reach more than 1,000 TWh in 2026 with over 35% of that energy dedicated to cooling servers. Efficient and sustainable cooling is a pressing challenge, particularly in regions where water is scarce.

The challenge

Demands on more sustainable operation

Munters, a global innovator in data center cooling solutions, offers both direct and indirect cooling technologies. However, market demands are evolving, particularly for co-location data centers where uptime, operational efficiency, and sustainability are paramount. To maintain their competitive edge and meet increasing sustainability requirements, data centers needed a new approach to reduce energy and water consumption without compromising performance.

The solution

Launching Munters SyCool Split

Munters introduced SyCool™ Split, a revolutionary cooling system that leverages ambient air-free cooling and incorporates the industry’s leading dry indirect economizer. Powered by patented thermosyphon technology, SyCool™ Split transports server heat out of data centers without using any water – a critical advantage in water-scarce regions. SyCool™ Split can be used for both air and liquid cooling, where the latter is becoming crucial since AI processors are creating extensive heat.

This innovation was recognized as the Winner of Mission Critical Magazine's 2021 Top Tier Product Award for Thermal Management Solutions. The system was market launched to the American data center market through a comprehensive awareness campaign that included PR, digital marketing, exhibitions, and robust sales efforts.

The impact

Billions in sales

After having set sail on a more extensive campaign and sales effort, Munters announced orders totaling 2.9 billion SEK. This momentum has continued with a series of additional orders, showcasing the solution's growing acceptance and success. In 2024 a strategic alliance was formed with ZutaCore, known for their truly waterless, direct to chip cooling technology. Combining ZutaCore’s solution with SyCool™ Split means extremely energy efficient cooling and heat rejection of high-density servers without potential damage due to water leaks. These benefits have rendered tremendous interest in the data center industry as waterless liquid cooling is believed to grow in order to efficiency facilitate cooling of high-density chips.
